PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

As an organization of predominantly African American women, Delta Sigma Theta is uniquely positioned to impact not only the well-being of its members, but also the well-being of families and communities at large. To facilitate this effort, a physical and mental health initiative was launched to educate and facilitate lifestyle change for the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of sorority members and the communities we serve. This thrust’s objectives are to raise awareness about the importance and benefits of lifestyle changes that affect longevity, morbidity, and mortality, identify organizational alliances for the sorority that will work to address pertinent health issues; and develop and implement health-focused programs within the sorority and the communities we serve.

  • Journey to Wellness

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has partnered with organizations to support various causes as national initiatives to raise awareness. North Dallas Suburban Alumnae Chapter is an active supporter of these causes, as well as other causes in our local community. The Physical and Mental Health Committee selects community walks for the chapter to participate in by becoming a part of Team NDSA Deltas. Some of the walks selected by the Physical and Mental Health Committee are as follows:

  • Sisters Network Dallas Breast Cancer Awareness Walk & Expo (a national initiative)
  • Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
  • Dallas American Heart Association 5K Walk
  • March for Babies 5K Walk
  • American Cancer Society Relay for Life

This is also a great “in reach” activity among sorors where there is good, uninterrupted time to strengthen bonds between sorors and fellowship. Additionally, it is a fun, creative way for sorors to incorporate physical activity, while giving back to the community at the same time.

The Physical and Mental Health Committee seeks creative ways to encourage and aid a soror’s journey to wellness. Examples are:

  • Healthy tips, recipes, and other pertinent information can be found in the chapter’s internal newsletter under the Physical and Mental Health section.
  • Monthly Physical and Mental Fitness challenges to help members in reaching their wellness goals.
  • Susan G.Komen
  • American Heart Association
  • March of Dimes
  • Weight Watchers
